Flashing Steel
is one of the most highly acclaimed books on the subject of iaijutsu. It has consistently received a rating with readers on the web sites of both Barnes & Noble and Amazon.Com.  It contains the complete system of Eishin-Ryu, explicitly described and clearly detailed in photographs and illustrations.

We listened to our readers ...

Flashing Steel:  Mastering Eishin-Ryu Swordsmanship has been the best selling book on iaido since its publication in 1995.  Readers and critics alike have hailed it as one of the most important books on traditional martial arts -- even comparing it to Sun Tzu's Art of War, the Book of Five Rings, and the Bubishi.  Shimabukuro Hanshi and I have been both pleased and humbled by the praises from our readers.

But we also listened to our critics.  Many readers mentioned that it was difficult to follow the techniques based solely on the written descriptions and photographs that showed only the major actions or "highlights" of the techniques.  Now, both we and our readers know that iaijutsu can't be learned from a book, which is why we developed the 7-part video instruction series, Samurai Sword, through Panther Productions.  We originally believed that these full-motion videos, filmed at multiple angles and at both regular speed and slow motion, with step-by-step narration were preferable to still photography.  What we didn't realize until people had actually been using the book for awhile, was the number of readers who carried Flashing Steel around as a sort of pocket guide.  Many of our readers were also using the book in places where they didn't have access to a VCR or DVD player.

So, when we were asked to update Flashing Steel last year, this need was foremost in our minds.  In addition to updating much of the text, we shot all new photographs -- over 1,700 of them!  Each technique is now shown in much greater detail, making Flashing Steel better than ever as a portable reference.
