Shimabukuro Hanshi Indiana Seminar
July 17 & 18, 2009

Shimabukuro Masayuki Hanshi, chairman of the International Division of the Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai and president of the Kokusai Nippon Budo Kai, will be conducting a seminar at Indiana Wesleyan University on July 17 & 18, 2009.  The schedule for this two-day seminar is:

Friday, July 17

Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu Iaijutsu is the 450-year-old art of drawing and cutting in a single movement with the samurai sword.  The Batto-Ho are the combative techniques of this art.  Uchida-Ryu tanjo-jutsu is the art of the 3-foot stick (tanjo) or cane in defense against attacks by a samurai sword.  It is based on the principles of Shindo Muso-Ryu Jojutsu, and has numerous practical self-defense applications today.   Ono-Ha Itto-Ryu Kenjutsu is a highly distinctive style of kenjutsu (samurai sword combat), which relies heavily on cutting directly through the opponent's attack to defend against and defeat him in a single movement.  Because this style depends on perfect timing and execution of these technique, it is considered one of the most elegant and effective styles of kenjutsu.

Shimabukuro Hanshi is one of the world's foremost instructors in these arts.  He holds the rank of 8th dan in Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu Iaijutsu and 7th dan in Shindo Muso-Ryu Jojutsu.  He also hold the title Hanshi from both the Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai and the Dai Nippon Butokukai, Japan's oldest and most prestigious martial arts organization.  This is Shimabukuro Hanshi's first time instructing in Indiana, so it offers midwesterners a rare opportunity to train with one of the leading authorities in these arts.

Indiana Wesleyan University is located in Marion, Indiana, which is roughly midway between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne on I-69.  Shuttle service will be available from the Indianapolis airport, departing at 5:00 PM on Thursday  and returning Saturday evening following the seminar (5:30 PM) for $40 each way.  It is approximately a two-hour drive to the airport.  Lodging is available on the scenic IWU campus for only $40 a night.  There are also nearby hotels and bed-and-breakfast accommodations available.

Three options for seminar participation are available:

• a two-day "package" that includes both days of the seminar, cafeteria lunches both days, the banquet Friday night, and breakfast Saturday morning for $220 (minus $20 if you register by June 15th)

• one-day seminar (your choice of Friday or Saturday) with a cafeteria lunch and the banquet for $150 (less $20 for registering by June 15th)

• one-day seminar with cafeteria lunch only for $125 (less $20 for registering by June 15th)

Bokken (white oak wooden training swords) will be available for rental ($20 for either or both days) or purchase ($30) and tanjo (white oak 3-foot long 7/8-inch diameter staffs) will also be available for rental ($15 for one or both days) or purchase ($25).  Although iaito (unsharpened metal swords) are encouraged for those who have access to one, all sword training activities at this seminar can be performed with a bokken (iaijutsu, kenjutsu, and attacking techniques in tanjo-jutsu).
