What is the Jikishin-Kai?

Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai

The term "Jikishin-Kai" refers to one (or sometimes all of them collectively) of these closely-related organizations:

The Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai
The Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai USA
The Jikishin-Kai International

Until recently, the Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai was headquartered in Osaka, Japan on the grounds of the Yasaka Jinja, a Shinto shrine. It was founded in 1975 by the current (20th) grandmaster of Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu iaijutsu, Miura Takeyuki Soshi (see "Who is Miura Soshi?"), and is the principal governing organization of Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu worldwide.

Miura Soshi took the name of the Jikishin-Kai from an ancient Japanese proverb: "Jikishin kore dojo nari." The meaning of this proverb is: "A pure heart ("jikishin") is your [true] dojo." Since all forms of samurai swordsmanship have their foundation in the principle of ken-shin ichi nyo -- the "sword and the heart as one" -- Miura Soshi understood that the most important facet of training in iaijutsu is developing a pure heart.

In the early 1990's, Miura Soshi appointed Shimabukuro Masayuki Hanshi (see "Who is Shima Hanshi?") as chairman of both the USA division and the international division of the Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai, and charged him with the task of promoting Eishin-Ryu iaijutsu worldwide. As a foundation for carrying out this mission, Shimabukuro Shihan founded two organizations: the Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai USA and the Jikishin-Kai International ("JKI"). Both of these organizations operate from the USA Hombu Dojo, which is located at:

Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai USA
Jikishin-Kai International

San Diego, CA 92117

The Nippon Karate-do/Kobudo Seishin-Kan is one of the original member dojo of the Jikishin-Kai International, and the Seishin-Kan's Dojo-Cho (chairman), Leonard Pellman, is a JKI director, as well as head of its Tsushin Kyoiku-Bu ("Distance Education Division").
