JKI Dojo Kun
"Code of the Dojo"

The Dojo Kun used at the Seishin-Kan is derived from the original Dojo Kun created by the founding father of karate-do, Sakugawa Kanga, sometime in the mid-18th century. We have preserved that ancient Dojo Kun in an effort to maintain a sense of historic connection to the origins of the art of karate-do and to those who have passed its legacy down to the present time. Equally important, however, is the advancement of that legacy to future generations. The Jikishin-Kai International (JKI) has set the stage for this advancement by developing a modernized Dojo Kun that restates the principles of classical karate-do in terminology more familiar to students training in the 21st century. Since we believe both approaches are important, we have posted the JKI Dojo Kun here.

Dojo Kun

ONE: I respect myself and others

ONE: I challenge myself to overcome obstacles

ONE: I live with a positive and healthy attitude

ONE: I have true compassion for others

ONE: I am committed to doing my best

"Ossu!"

A close examination of the JKI Dojo Kun shows that it embodies all of the major principles of the older Dojo Kun still followed at the Seishin-Kan, but the wording is more attuned to 21st century thought and attitudes. It still deals with respect, personal discipline, perseverance, strong character, and achieving excellence. It is the striving for these goals in life that is important and beneficial; not the way we state them. We therefore encourage all Seishin-Kan students to memorize the JKI Dojo Kun, as well as the older version.  However you prefer to recite the Dojo Kun, we encourage you to do your best to live it every day.  Ossu!
